Quartzite
Quartzite is a metamorphic rock and is made entirely of the mineral quartz. It is an extremely hard material that is extremely scratch-resistant. Quartzite is ranked seventh on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it is harder than glass & a knife’s blade. Quartzite is not sensitive to acid & will not etch in comparison to marble.
Quartzite is a stone that can resemble the appearance of a marble. Whilst quartzite does not etch with acidic substances, it is porous by nature. The sealing of quartzite is very important, meaning it requires regular resealing. Quartzite is a very durable stone for countertops providing that the stone is sealed periodically.
Sealing of Quartzite Worktops & Bathrooms
Every quartzite installation from Miller Brother’s is professionally sealed on installation. The sealing process occurs when a solvent liquid sealer is applied to the surface. This liquid enters the pores of the stone and makes the surface water-repellent, oil-repellent & resistant to organic stains (food stains). All of our installers are qualified and trained applicators.
The sealing process protects the surface from water, oil & food stains. It also makes cleaning of the counter a much easier task.
Resealing of Quartzite Counters & Bathrooms
We advise having all quartzite counters & bathrooms professionally sealed every 12 - 16 months. This is a service we provide for our clients. Please contact our office if this is a service you would like to arrange.
Daily maintenance - why you should use our stone cleaner on quartzite surfaces
Most normal household cleaners can leave a greasy, smeary like layer on the surface. As our daily cleaner is PH-neutral, it does not leave this greasy, smeary like layer. Our daily cleaner also effortlessly removes light dirt and grease and has a very fresh fragrance. For best results apply using a microfiber cloth.
Please note:
The sealing process on quartzite countertops is a 3 week process from installation. We recommend little, or no use of the countertops during this period.
General Tips for Quartzite care
While the sealer we use is extremely effective, any stone is liable to stain if a substance like oil or wine is left sit on its surface for long periods of time. If this happens, always try and wipe up a spill immediately and never let a spill sit for too long.
Quartzite offers a natural beauty that cannot be matched by any other stone. To maintain this beauty, extra care and maintenance are required.
You should always take care not to drop any large objects on the edge of stone surfaces as chipping may occur. Keep in mind that stone is most vulnerable to chips on edges and on any bevels or sloping edges.
Always use a specialist cleaner and have the stone periodically sealed.
